How to Seek Asylum in Turkey?
To apply for “international protection/asylum” in Turkey, you can apply to the Provincial Directorate of Immigration Management, regardless of the city you are in. There is no legal time limit to apply for international protection. However, it is recommended that people who want to apply for asylum in Turkey apply to the authorities and initiate the application process as soon as possible and without delay after arriving in Turkey. If you do not speak Turkish, a free translator will be provided.
What Will Happen During and After the Application for International Protection?
After you submit your application, the authorities will conduct a registration interview with you. Depending on the intensity of the authorities, the registration interview may not be held immediately on the application day. In this case, officials will give you an appointment date and ask you to return for a registration interview. During the registration interview, officials will ask basic questions about your identity and your reasons for leaving your country. It will be in your best interest to answer the questions as thoroughly and honestly as possible.
You will also be asked to provide your passport and any other identification documents you have with you, if you have them, and any documentation regarding your reasons for leaving your country. The authorities will make photocopies of these documents and return the originals to you. If necessary, authorities may search your belongings and items in your luggage. They will also take your fingerprints and take your biometric photo. If necessary, you may be referred to a health institution. Your family members accompanying you will also be subject to the same registration process.
If and when you are granted a positive decision it does not grant Turkish citizenship but allows you to stay in Turkey under “international protection status.” You will receive an International Protection Status Holder Identity Document, which is free of charge and typically valid for one year, with possible extensions depending on your status.
If your application is denied, you have the right to appeal the decision. Failure to appeal within the legal timeframe will result in the decision becoming final, and if there are no other legal grounds for your stay, you will face deportation. In this case, getting legal support from a lawyer specialized in refugee rights will increase your chances of staying in Turkey.

Can I Apply Asylum While in a Removal Center?
Yes, you can apply for international protection even if you are held in a removal center due to deportation or administrative detention. Your deportation decision will be suspended while your international protection application is being processed.
My International Protection Application Has Been Accepted. Can I Get Turkish Citizenship?
According to the legislation in force in Turkey, people who have received international protection status are not entitled to citizenship. However, if it is not possible for you to settle in another country, you can continue to live in Turkey as an international protection status holder.
